# Thesis Architecture and Chapter Coherence

## 1. One-line description

A structural method for holding a single argument across a long thesis, checking that each chapter does a distinct job, that every research question is introduced, addressed and answered in the same terms, and that a document written over several years reads as one coherent piece of work rather than a sequence of a candidate's past selves.

## 2. What this skill is used for

**The research problem it solves.** Incoherence in a long thesis is a structural problem that presents as a writing problem, which is why editing does not fix it. The characteristic failures are architectural. A research question appears in the introduction, is never operationalised in the methods, and reappears answered in the conclusion. A construct is defined one way in the literature chapter, measured as something narrower, and discussed as something broader. A literature chapter reviews everything the candidate read rather than what the argument needs. An introduction promises a contribution the conclusion does not deliver, usually because the introduction was written first and never revised. Terminology drifts across chapters written eighteen months apart. And the thesis carries, embedded in its early chapters, an understanding the candidate has since outgrown and can no longer see, because they have read those pages a hundred times. This skill runs the alignment checks that find these, and it does so from the position of a reader who has never seen the work before.

**Where it sits in the research lifecycle.** Twice: early, where a chapter plan with defined jobs prevents most of the problems, and late, in the final months, where the coherence pass is the highest-return activity available besides examiner-proofing. It also runs at any point where the project has changed direction and the earlier chapters have not caught up.

**Typical use cases.**
- Building a chapter plan in which every chapter has a stated job and a stated dependency.
- Running the research question alignment matrix across a full draft.
- Finding the constructs whose definitions have drifted between chapters.
- Reconciling an introduction written in year one with a conclusion written in year four.
- Deciding what belongs in the body and what belongs in an appendix.
- Structuring a publication-based thesis so that the linking material carries the argument.
- The final read-as-examiner pass before submission.

**Who uses it.** Doctoral candidates from first chapter plan to final submission; supervisors reviewing a full draft; anyone assembling a long argued document from work produced over an extended period.

## 3. When to use it

- Your supervisor has said the thesis does not hang together, or that a chapter does not connect.
- You have a full or near-full draft and have never read it start to finish as one document.
- You can no longer say in one sentence what your thesis argues.
- Your research questions have changed since the introduction was written.
- You suspect a chapter is there because you did the work, not because the argument needs it.
- Your findings chapter reports things no research question asked about, or omits something a question asked.
- Your early chapters reflect a way of thinking about the topic you have moved past.
- You are assembling a publication-based thesis and the papers do not obviously form one argument.
- You are within a few months of submission and want the structural problems found before an examiner finds them.

## 4. When NOT to use it

- **The problem is prose quality rather than structure.** Sentence-level clarity, paragraph argumentation, academic register and flow are **15.05 Academic Writing Structure and Argumentation**. A structurally sound thesis that reads badly needs editing; a well-written thesis that does not hang together needs this skill, and the two are commonly confused because incoherence often surfaces first as a reader saying the writing is hard to follow.
- **The underlying research has a hole.** No architecture repairs a research question the study did not answer or a contribution that is not there. Structure can make a weak thesis legible; it cannot make it strong, and an elegantly organised thesis with no contribution fails more visibly than a messy one. - **The methodology itself needs defending.** Justifying choices against alternatives is **15.16 Doctoral Methodology Justification and Rigour**. This skill checks that whatever the methodology chapter concedes is respected everywhere else, which is a different and complementary job.
- **The task is examination strategy.** Finding what an examiner will attack, deciding what to fix and what to defend, and preparing for the viva is **15.19 Examiner-Proofing and Defence Strategy**. This skill hands over to it: coherence problems found here become attack surfaces there, and the boundary is that this skill asks whether the argument holds together while 15.19 asks whether it survives a hostile expert.
- **Formatting and submission requirements are the concern.** Word limits, layout, declaration pages and binding are institutional requirements, not architecture, and they vary by institution.
- **The draft is too partial for a coherence pass.** Running an alignment matrix over two chapters produces noise. Below a substantial draft of most chapters, the useful work is the chapter plan in Step 1, not the audit.
- **Referencing consistency is the task.** Applying a style correctly and checking citations against the reference list is **15.03 Referencing and Citation Management**.
- **Academic integrity.** Per §12.1: this skill does not write, rewrite or draft thesis text for submission as the candidate's own unaided output. It diagnoses structural problems, locates them by chapter and section, and specifies what each fix requires; the candidate writes it. Where an institution prohibits AI assistance for a task, this skill must not be used for it.

## 5. Required inputs

**Required.**
- **The research questions in their current final form.** Everything in the alignment work is measured against them, and a coherence audit against superseded questions produces confident findings about the wrong thing.
- **The contribution statement.** The thesis's argument is the path to the contribution, and without it there is no criterion for whether a chapter earns its place.
- **The thesis text, or a substantial and current draft.** A coherence audit cannot be run on a chapter plan, on summaries, or on the candidate's account of what the chapters say, since the drift being looked for is precisely the gap between what a candidate believes a chapter says and what it says (K4 §6.4).

**Optional, and what each one adds.**
- **The original proposal.** Shows the distance travelled, which is usually where the introduction's promises came from.
- **A chapter-by-chapter word count and section list.** Reveals imbalance, which is a reliable early symptom of a chapter doing the wrong job.
- **The construct definitions from the theoretical chapter.** Lets the definitional drift check be run precisely rather than impressionistically.
- **Supervisor comments across drafts.** Repeated comments on different chapters frequently point to one underlying structural fault.
- **The institution's thesis regulations and any structural expectations.** Chapter conventions differ by discipline and institution, and imposing an unfamiliar structure is a real risk.
- **Dates on which each chapter was drafted.** Predicts where the outgrown-understanding problem will be, which is almost always the earliest-written chapters.

## 6. Questions to ask before starting

1. **What does the thesis argue, in one sentence?** If the candidate cannot say it, the architecture cannot be checked against it and building it is the first task. Default: derive a candidate sentence from the contribution statement and confirm it, flagging that it is provisional.
2. **What job does each chapter do, in one sentence each?** Default: if a job cannot be stated without describing content ("this chapter presents the interviews"), the chapter's function has not been decided.
3. **Which chapters were written when?** Default: assume the earliest are the most out of date, and read them first and hardest.
4. **Monograph or publication-based, and is that fixed?** The coherence work differs substantially between them. Default: ask, because the answer changes the whole approach.
5. **Have the research questions changed since the introduction was written?** Default: assume they have, and check the introduction's wording against the current questions word by word rather than by sense.
6. **Who is the examiner, in discipline terms?** A specialist reads for the contribution and the method; a generalist second examiner reads for whether the argument is followable. Default: write for both, which means the argument must survive without specialist background.
7. **How long until submission?** Determines whether the output is a fix list or a triage list, since some structural fixes cost weeks. Default: rank every finding by cost as well as by severity.

## 7. Step-by-step methodology

**Step 1. Write the thesis sentence and the chapter job list.**
One sentence stating what the thesis argues, containing a claim rather than a description of activity. Then one sentence per chapter stating its job in the argument, phrased as a function rather than as content: "establishes that the existing explanation fails in three specified ways" rather than "reviews the literature". Then, for each chapter, name what it needs from earlier chapters and what later chapters need from it. Two failures show up immediately. A chapter that needs nothing and is needed by nothing is detachable, which is a finding. And two chapters with the same job, most commonly a literature chapter and a theory chapter that both survey the field, or a findings chapter and a discussion chapter that both interpret. *Correct result: a thesis sentence, a job sentence per chapter, and a dependency map with detachable chapters and duplicated jobs identified.*

**Step 2. Run the research question alignment matrix.**
Build a matrix with research questions down the side and chapters across the top, and fill each cell with what that chapter does with that question: introduces it, motivates it from the literature, operationalises it, reports data on it, answers it, or discusses it. Then read the matrix for the four diagnostic patterns. A question introduced and never operationalised, which means the methods do not serve it. A question with data reported but no answer stated, which is the most common finding of all and is usually a discussion chapter that interprets without concluding. A question answered in the conclusion with no data row above it, which is the most serious, because a conclusion that answers an unmeasured question is an assertion. And material reported that answers no question, which is either an undeclared question the thesis is actually answering, in which case add it, or work that should be cut or moved to an appendix. This matrix takes an afternoon and finds more structural error than any other single activity. *Correct result: a completed matrix, with every incomplete row and every orphan column identified and classified.*

**Step 3. Test that each chapter earns its place.**
For each chapter, ask three things. What would be lost if it were deleted, answered in terms of the argument rather than in terms of effort? Does anything later depend on it, specifically, by section? And could its essential content sit in an appendix or in two paragraphs of a neighbouring chapter without loss? Chapters most often failing this test are recognisable types: a general context chapter that describes the sector or country without the argument ever using it, a methodology-adjacent chapter describing an approach that was ultimately not used, a second literature chapter that repeats the first at greater length, and a findings chapter organised by data collection instrument rather than by research question, so that it reports everything collected regardless of relevance. The correction is rarely deletion of the work; it is relocation, compression, or a stated job the chapter can then do properly. *Correct result: a verdict per chapter of keep, compress, relocate or move to appendix, with the reason.*

**Step 4. Run the construct consistency audit.**
Take the five to ten central constructs and, for each, extract every definition and every substantive use across the whole thesis with its location. Then compare. The drift patterns are consistent: a construct defined broadly in the literature chapter, measured narrowly by the instrument, and discussed broadly again in the conclusion, which is how a thesis silently claims more than it measured. A construct used interchangeably with a near-synonym so that the reader cannot tell whether they are the same thing. A construct whose definition was updated in one chapter during revision and not in the others. And a construct introduced in the findings that was never defined at all, usually a category name from the analysis that has quietly become a theoretical term. Every instance is recorded with chapter and page, because a finding of "the construct drifts" is unactionable while "defined on p.34, measured as items 4 to 9 which capture only the first dimension, discussed on p.187 as though it covered all three" is a specific fix. This is also, independently, one of the two or three things an examiner most reliably finds. *Correct result: a construct table with every definition and use located, and each drift marked with the fix required.*

**Step 5. Reconcile the introduction with the conclusion, line by line.**
Read the introduction and the conclusion consecutively and nothing in between. The introduction makes promises: this thesis will address these questions, make this contribution, use this approach, and matter for these reasons. The conclusion delivers something. Compare them item by item. Promises not delivered must be removed from the introduction or delivered; there is no third option, and an examiner reading the introduction first will hold every promise against the rest of the document. Deliveries not promised must be introduced, since a contribution that appears for the first time in chapter eight reads as an afterthought regardless of its quality. Check that the contribution is stated in the same terms in both, and that the scope is the same: introductions habitually claim a broader population, period or setting than the study reached. Because the introduction is normally written first and revised least, assume it is the out-of-date document and rewrite it against the conclusion rather than the reverse. *Correct result: a promise-and-delivery table with every mismatch resolved in one direction or the other.*

**Step 6. Check the terminology and position consistency of a document written over years.**
Build a term list of every technical term, label, abbreviation and participant or site descriptor, and check each is used identically throughout. Then check positions, which is the harder pass: the stance taken on a contested issue in the literature chapter must be the stance the discussion operates from. Candidates commonly write a balanced literature chapter early, presenting two positions even-handedly, then adopt one implicitly during analysis without ever declaring the move, so that chapter seven argues from a position chapter two left open. Also check citation-era consistency: a literature chapter written three years ago and not updated is visible to any examiner in the field, and the fix is a targeted update of the last three years of relevant work rather than a rewrite. Where the candidate's understanding has genuinely developed, the early chapters must be rewritten from the current understanding, and the specific difficulty is that the candidate can no longer see the old framing because they have read the pages too many times. The practical remedy is to read the earliest chapter against the latest one and mark every place the two would not be written by the same person. *Correct result: a term list with corrections, a position audit, and a list of passages reflecting a superseded understanding.*

**Step 7. Check forward and backward referencing, and the chapter joins.**
Every chapter should end by establishing what it has settled and what the next chapter must therefore do, and begin by stating what it takes from what came before. These joins are what make a long document navigable, and they are the cheapest structural improvement available, since each one is a paragraph. Then check every internal cross-reference actually points where it claims: "as discussed in Chapter 4" is wrong at least once in most long theses, and a wrong cross-reference is a small error that reads as carelessness in a document being assessed for care. Also check that forward references promise things that later appear, since a promise to return to something and no return is a loose end an examiner will note. *Correct result: an opening and closing paragraph verified for every chapter, and every cross-reference checked against its target.*

**Step 8. Handle the format-specific coherence work.**
A monograph carries the argument in a single continuous line, so its risks are internal: a literature chapter that becomes a survey rather than an argument, a findings chapter organised by instrument rather than by question, and a discussion that repeats the findings instead of interpreting them. Its coherence work is the chapter joins and the alignment matrix. A publication-based thesis has a structurally different problem: each paper was written to stand alone, for a different audience and length, positioned against a different literature, possibly with different co-authors and different terminology, and the coherence has to be constructed by the linking material. That material must state the overarching contribution no single paper makes, reconcile definitions and terminology across papers explicitly rather than hoping the reader will not notice, establish the dependency between papers, explain repeated material, document the candidate's contribution to each co-authored paper specifically, and provide an integrated discussion that no individual paper's discussion could deliver. The linking chapters are not administrative connective tissue in this format; they are where the thesis's own argument lives and where it is examined. *Correct result: for a monograph, verified joins and a question-organised findings structure; for a publication-based thesis, a complete linking specification.*

**Step 9. Decide what belongs in the appendix, using a functional test.**
The test is whether a reader needs the material to follow or to check the argument. Material needed to follow belongs in the body: the instrument's key items where the measurement is contested, the coding structure where the analysis rests on it, the sample composition. Material needed only to check belongs in an appendix: the full instrument, the full code frame with definitions and examples, ethics documentation, participant information and consent materials, extended data tables, the search log, and the audit trail. Material needed for neither should not be in the thesis at all, and the commonest offender is a large volume of raw output included as evidence of work. Then check the appendix is actually usable: every appendix referenced from the body at the point it is needed, numbered consistently, and self-explanatory, because an unreferenced appendix is not read and an appendix nobody reads cannot support a claim. A specific and frequent error is a claim in the body supported only by an appendix that is never pointed to. *Correct result: an appendix inventory with a functional justification for each item and a verified reference from the body.*

**Step 10. Run the final pass as an examiner, not as an author.**
Read the whole document straight through, in order, in as few sittings as possible, with no editing. Authors cannot do this on their own text without a deliberate change of position, so make the change explicit: read for whether the argument is followable by someone encountering it for the first time, not for whether each sentence is right. Keep a single running list, and note four things only. Where you lost the thread, since that is where a reader will. Where you would have asked a question the text does not answer. Where a claim appeared that you did not see established. And where you were bored, which is almost always where a chapter is doing a job the argument does not need. Then check the top-and-tail test: read only the first and last paragraph of every chapter in sequence and confirm they alone tell a coherent story, because that is approximately what a busy examiner reads first. Finally, sort every finding by severity and by cost to fix, and be explicit that some structural findings cannot be fixed in the time available and must instead be prepared for as defence points. `RESEARCHER DECISION REQUIRED` on any finding whose fix requires more time than remains, since that trade-off is the candidate's and supervisor's to make (K5 §2.7). *Correct result: a prioritised findings list with severity, location, fix, and estimated cost, separated into fix-now, fix-if-time and defend.*

## 8. Analytical framework

The thesis is checked against the golden thread, which is a single line that must be traceable end to end:

    Problem → Gap → Research questions → Theoretical frame → Design →
    Data → Findings → Answers to the questions → Contribution → Implications

Every element must appear, in this order, and each must be recognisably the same object it was at the previous step. The thread breaks in four characteristic places: between research questions and design, where the method does not serve the question; between findings and answers, where results are reported but no question is answered; between answers and contribution, where the contribution claims more than the answers support; and between the gap and the contribution, where the thesis fills a different gap from the one it opened with.

A second structure governs chapters, and each must satisfy all four tests:

A chapter failing Job is unfocused, failing Dependency is detachable, failing Uniqueness is duplicated, and failing Proportion is usually a chapter where the candidate did the most work rather than where the argument needs the most space. Each diagnosis implies a different fix.

**When the evidence is thin, the format must not force fabrication (K4 §1).** Where a chapter has not been drafted, the matrix cell records not written, never a prediction of what it will contain. Where the audit is run on a partial draft, the output states which chapters were assessed and which were not, and no coherence verdict is given on the whole document. A finding that a research question is unanswered is reported as such and never resolved by proposing an answer for the candidate to insert, since that would be writing the thesis's conclusion.

## 10. Quality checks

Run before submission, and ideally three months before. These sit on top of K4 §8.

1. Can the thesis's argument be stated in one sentence containing a claim?
2. Does every chapter have a job stated as a function rather than as content?
3. Is every chapter needed by something specific later in the document?
4. Does any research question lack an operationalisation, a data row, or a stated answer?
5. Is anything reported that answers no research question, and has it been cut, moved or converted into a declared question?
6. Does every central construct carry the same definition in the theory, the measurement and the discussion?
7. Does the introduction promise exactly what the conclusion delivers, in the same terms and at the same scope?
8. Was the introduction rewritten after the conclusion was known?
9. Is terminology identical throughout, including abbreviations and participant descriptors?
10. Is the position taken on contested issues in the literature chapter the position the discussion argues from?
11. Has the literature been updated to the year of submission in the areas where the field has moved?
12. Does every chapter open by stating what it takes from earlier work and close by stating what it hands on?
13. Does every cross-reference point to what it claims, and does every forward promise get kept?
14. Is every appendix referenced from the body at the point it is needed, and is no body claim supported only by an unreferenced appendix?
15. Has the whole document been read straight through, in order, as a reader rather than as its author?

## 12. AI guardrails

Skill-specific. The universal prohibitions in K4 apply in full and are not repeated.

1. **Academic integrity, and it binds this whole skill.** These skills assist a researcher's thinking, structure and rigour. They do not produce work to be submitted as the student's own unaided output. The user must comply with their institution's AI use policy and its declaration requirements, which vary by institution and by assessment. Where an institution prohibits AI assistance for a task, this skill must not be used for it. The skill never writes a passage for submission as though the student wrote it; it interrogates, structures, critiques and teaches. This skill sits closest of any in the track to the line, because its findings are structural and the obvious next move is to supply the missing paragraph. It does not. It states what is missing, where it belongs, what it must establish, and what evidence it must draw on, and the candidate writes it. A thesis whose connective argument was written elsewhere is a thesis the candidate cannot defend at the joins, and the joins are exactly where a viva probes.

2. **Never assess a chapter you have not read in full.** Coherence findings depend on what the text actually says, not on its headings or the candidate's description of it. Where a chapter was not supplied, the output says so and excludes it from every judgement (K4 §6.4).

3. **Never infer that a research question is answered because a chapter discusses the topic.** The alignment matrix records what the text does, not what it appears to be about. An answer is a sentence that answers; a discussion of related material is not.

4. **Never supply the missing answer, conclusion or contribution.** Where the matrix shows a question unanswered, the finding is that it is unanswered. Proposing the answer would be writing the thesis's central claim, and it would also mean proposing a conclusion that the data may not support (K4 §1).

5. **Never resolve a construct drift by choosing a definition.** Report the divergence with all its locations and let the candidate decide which definition the thesis holds, because that decision determines what the thesis claims and is theirs to make.

6. **Never recommend a chapter structure as standard.** Thesis conventions differ by discipline, country and institution, and imposing an unfamiliar structure can create problems where none existed. Where a structural convention is assumed, say so and name what would confirm it.

7. **Never report a coherence problem without its location.** "The argument is inconsistent" is unactionable. Every finding names the chapters, sections and where possible the pages involved (K2 §4).

8. **Never present a structural finding as fatal or as trivial without saying what turns on it.** Severity is judged against what an examiner would do with it, and the honest categories are: would fail without a fix, would generate a correction, would generate a question in the viva, or is invisible to a reader.

9. **Where the fix costs more time than remains, say so plainly and hand it to the defence track rather than proposing a cosmetic repair** (K5 §2.7). A structural problem papered over is more dangerous than one the candidate has prepared to concede.

## 13. Best-practice principles

- **Incoherence is structural and does not respond to editing.** If a chapter does not connect, better sentences will not connect it, and months are lost by candidates trying.
- **Every chapter has one job, and it should be expressible without describing its content.** The moment a chapter's job can only be stated as "it presents the interview data", it has content and no function.
- **The alignment matrix is the highest-yield hour in the final year.** It is mechanical, it takes an afternoon, and it finds the errors that most reliably cost corrections.
- **Write the introduction last, whatever order you drafted it in.** It is the document's promise, and promises should be made once the delivery is known.
- **Organise findings by research question, not by instrument.** An instrument-shaped findings chapter forces the reader to do the assembly, and it is where irrelevant material gets included because it was collected.
- **Your earliest chapters contain a version of you that no longer exists.** You cannot see it by re-reading them, only by reading them against your most recent chapter and asking whether the same person wrote both.
- **A construct that changes meaning between chapters is the single most reliable examiner find.** It is also easy to fix once located, which is why locating it is worth doing deliberately rather than hoping.
- **Chapter joins are the cheapest coherence improvement in the thesis.** One paragraph at each end of each chapter converts a sequence of documents into an argument.
- **Length should follow argumentative weight, not effort.** The chapter where you spent two years is not necessarily the chapter that carries the argument, and examiners notice the mismatch.
- **The appendix is for checking, not for storing.** If it is needed to follow the argument it belongs in the body; if it is needed for neither following nor checking, it does not belong in the thesis.
- **Read the first and last paragraph of every chapter in sequence.** If that alone does not tell the story, no examiner reading under time pressure will find it either.
- **Some structural problems should be defended rather than fixed.** Late in the process, an honest limitation prepared for is safer than a rushed restructure that breaks something else.

## 14. Worked example

Generic fictional scenario, academic, urban planning.

**INPUT**

A doctoral candidate has a complete draft of 78,000 words in eight chapters on informal street trading and municipal regulation. Her supervisor says it "does not quite hang together" and cannot say precisely why. Submission is in four months.

**PROCESS**

*Step 1.* The thesis sentence takes three attempts. The first two describe activity. The third states a claim: that municipal regulation of street trading fails not because it is under-enforced but because it is designed around a model of trading that does not exist in practice. The chapter job list is then written, and two chapters, three and four, both have the job "reviews the literature on informal economies". That is the first finding.

*Step 2.* The alignment matrix is built for four research questions. RQ1 and RQ2 are complete. RQ3, on trader responses to enforcement, is introduced in chapter one, has data in chapter six, and is never answered: chapter seven discusses enforcement at length without stating what the answer is. RQ4, on policy implications, is answered in chapter eight from no data row at all, having been added to the introduction late. And a substantial section of chapter six reports data on supplier relationships that answers no question.

*Step 3 and 4.* Chapter two, a 9,000-word context chapter on the city's economic history, is examined. Nothing later depends on it except two paragraphs. Verdict: compress to 2,000 words in chapter one and move the rest to an appendix. The construct audit finds the central term, "informality", defined broadly in chapter three as encompassing regulatory, spatial and fiscal dimensions, operationalised in chapter five as trading without a permit only, and used in chapter seven's discussion in the broad sense again. That is the thesis's most dangerous single defect: it claims more than it measured, in a term that appears in the title.

*The judgement call.* The supplier-relationship data in chapter six is genuinely interesting and took four months to collect. Three options: cut it, move it to an appendix, or add a fifth research question it answers. Adding a question means revising the introduction, the methodology's justification and the conclusion, which is real work at four months out. Cutting loses good material. The decision taken is to add the question, because the data turns out to support the thesis sentence directly: supplier relationships are one of the things the regulatory model does not see. The material moves from being an orphan to being the strongest single piece of evidence for the central claim. This would not have been visible without the matrix.

*Step 5.* The introduction promises a comparative element across three municipalities that the study, after access failure at one site, delivers for two. The introduction is rewritten to promise two. It also promises a policy framework that chapter eight does not provide, so either the framework is written or the promise is removed; given four months, the promise is removed and the implications are stated more modestly.

*Step 6.* Chapter three, written 40 months ago, treats a debate as open that chapter seven argues from one side of without acknowledgement. Chapter three gets a new closing section declaring the position taken and why. The most recent citation in chapter three is four years old, and a targeted update adds eleven recent sources, two of which are directly relevant to RQ3.

*Step 10.* The straight-through read finds the thread lost at the chapter five to six transition, where the methodology ends and the findings begin with no join. Two paragraphs fix it.

**OUTPUT**

A prioritised list of 23 findings. Four are fix-now: the construct drift, the unanswered RQ3, the introduction's over-promise, and the duplicated literature chapters. Nine are fix-if-time. Ten are cosmetic. One is defend: the study covers two municipalities rather than three, which cannot be fixed and is now stated honestly in the introduction, the methodology and the limitations, with a prepared answer for the viva.

`RESEARCHER DECISION REQUIRED` on adding the fifth research question at four months out, since it requires revision in four chapters and the trade-off against remaining time is the candidate's and supervisor's (K5 §2.7).

## 15. Advanced usage

**The reverse outline.** Read the finished draft and write, from the text alone, one sentence per paragraph saying what that paragraph does. Then read only your sentences. This exposes structure at a resolution the alignment matrix cannot reach: paragraphs doing two jobs, sections whose sentences do not follow, and chapters whose middle third does nothing. It is laborious and it is the most powerful diagnostic in this skill for a chapter that is known to be wrong but not why.

**The examiner's reading order.** Many examiners read the abstract, then the introduction, then the conclusion, then the methodology, then the findings, and only then the literature. Read the thesis in that order and check it survives: the conclusion must be intelligible without the findings chapter, and the methodology must be defensible without the literature review's set-up. Anything that only makes sense in linear order is a risk. Hands over to **15.19 Examiner-Proofing and Defence Strategy**.

**Restructuring late without breaking things.** Where a restructure is unavoidable close to submission, do it by moving whole sections rather than rewriting, keep a map of what moved where, and re-run the cross-reference check and the alignment matrix afterwards, because moving material is the single most reliable way to break a reference or orphan a claim.

**Coherence in a co-authored publication-based thesis.** Where papers have co-authors, the linking material must do additional work: state the candidate's specific contribution to each paper in terms an examiner can test, and demonstrate that the overarching argument is the candidate's own rather than the supervisor's programme. This is examined directly in most institutions and vague contribution statements read badly.

**Using the architecture as a writing plan.** Run Steps 1 and 2 before writing rather than after. A chapter job list and an alignment matrix built at the plan stage cost a day and prevent most of what this skill otherwise finds two years later, which is why the highest-value use of this skill is early rather than late.
